Postconsumers isn’t the only group of people out there exploring the idea of satisfaction and consumerism, or for that matter just happiness! Many people have said many brilliant things on the topic, and each week we’ll bring you one for discussion. This week’s quote of the week is:
“Anybody who thinks money will make you happy hasn’t got money.” David Geffen
If you’re hip to the music scene, you’ll know that David Geffen is one of the most powerful music executives of all time. Not only did he found Geffen Records, he was also one of the original three founders of Dreamworks. David Geffen, to put it mildly, has money. In fact, he’s worth an estimated 4.6 billion dollars.
But David Geffen isn’t always happy, and he’s learned over the years that money isn’t what would make him happy. Focusing on his creative endeavors? That’s what makes him happy. He’s also a philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to AIDS and health research as well as the arts.
Now, it would be easy to say that David Geffen can say that money doesn’t make you happy because he has money. Let’s just think for one moment of how many people we see in public coverage who, despite having almost unlimited financial resources, aren’t happy. Sure, we all say that if we had that much money, we’d live differently and be happy. But we’re sure that those people all said that as well. Take it from David Geffen, because they don’t come much more wealthy than he is, money will not make you happy. Finding your own satisfaction separate from the financial rat race is where your future is!
