One of my resolutions every year is to read more books. Friends of mine get me the gift of books all year round, and I never seem to get through all the gifts! But this year is going to be different, because I’ve been researching book clubs around my city so I can expand my social circle and read new and interesting things! I’ve been involved in book clubs before, and made some great friends plus got a real sense of satisfaction in reading a good story and having a group of people to talk about it with!

Thinking Out Loud

No matter what kind of genre your book club reads (or even if they just like to read everything), getting together to talk about the book’s plot/content and characters, and even learning about the history of authors can add a new understanding and enrichment to any reading experience. Many book clubs like to read the classics, and if you read them in high school or college, getting to re-read books can give you a whole new perspective on the text – and if you didn’t like the book before, maybe you’ll like it with a different context.

A Sense Of Community

The great thing about book clubs is that it’s a small group of folks from all kinds of backgrounds sharing their love of books. Regular meetings can create bonds between readers, building friendships and community that can last well beyond the book club. For single folks, you might even meet someone there! (I’ve had friends of mine introduced to future spouses through book club members!) What’s great about book clubs is that they’re a place to let go of all the stresses of everyday life, have some cool conversation, and let your mind wander to all kinds of places. And you never know – one of those great conversations just might change your life!
