You may know Lao-Tzu as the father of Taoism, an ancient Chinese religion. As part of that religion, Lao-Tzu wrote the Tao Te Ching (or Way Of Power), a text that serves as a kind of personal guidebook. It contains many beautiful passages that can be applied to anyone’s life, despite their backgrounds. One of the best quotes I’ve read from the ancient philosopher doesn’t come from the Tao Te Ching itself, but it’s a very relevant quote:

He who knows that enough is enough will always have enough.

Is that not Postconsumerism in a nutshell? Who knew that knowing the satisfaction of enough would be a key idea six centuries before Christ was born? It’s crazy to think about! But it’s always been there, the idea that knowing what is enough for you today will make you satisfied.

It’s something to think about, any time of year!
