For some of us, spring cleaning stresses us out. In the past, I’ve looked at my humble abode when I was ready to start and just thought, “How on Earth am I going to do this?” It felt like a job that would never get done. But over the years, I’ve developed some tips to make spring cleaning just a little bit easier and less stressful.
What kind of environment do you want when you clean?
This is probably the most important thing to help me get motivated. I love to have music on while I’m cleaning – I can sing along, making motions in time to the rhythm. I notice that things tend to get done a lot faster, and I have some fun to boot! On the other side of the coin, you may want to consider a more Zen-like approach and just tackle cleaning with a quiet house. If it makes you more comfortable, go for it.
Think of cleaning as meditation
Remembering to use mindfulness as I clean has always been one of my biggest setbacks when it comes to the whole house. I’d always think of spring cleaning as a slog instead of reminding myself that I’m creating a better space to live in. If I focus on the cleaning as a way to clear out life and mind clutter, I feel less stressed and more accomplished when I’m done.
Remember: start small
I start off one room at a time and divvy up the other rooms for later. The whole house doesn’t have to be done all in one day, you know! I start with my own bedroom, bathroom, and closet first, since it’s the first space I see in my day. Then I tackle the other parts of the house in separate cleaning bursts. After that, with some of my stuff given away, cleaning is just spot maintenance!
Most of all, keep a positive attitude! In the end, you’ll be coming home to a cleaner house, which makes for a clearer mind and a reduction in stuff and stress.
