When Father’s Day comes around, are you always strapped for ideas? If you’re going to go the gift route, maybe you’d like to get something this year that’s a little more environmentally friendly for dear old Dad. Of course, we’ve already told you about how to give alternatives to cards for birthdays or any holiday. There are plenty of ideas out there! Here are 5 thoughts for Father’s Day gifts to get your brain going for presents for your Dad this year.

Upcycled/Recycled Gifts: As always, we’re big big fans of being able to recycle and upcycle gifts for any occasion, so if you’re able to repurpose some cloth for a fancy tie, or use cleaned bicycle tires for a repurposed wallet, they’ll add a personal touch while reusing old products. Online stores with independent sellers – like Etsy – sell droves of recycled and repurposed items for all kinds of fathers. (I saw a pair of old typewriter keys that were made into cufflinks, which is great for any wordy Dad!)

Shaving Supplies that are Environmentally-Friendly: For the Dad who likes to keep his face clean-shaven, it’s good to know that he doesn’t have to use those same old chemically-laden shaving creams and aftershaves or brushes with plastic handles and non-natural bristles. Even though green consumerism has its pitfalls, a little research (or even a trip to your local eco-friendly store) can show you many products out there that won’t pollute, as well as products that are made from natural, recycled materials.

An Eco-Friendly Brewing Kit: If your family has already started their own composting program, getting Dad a brewing kit can help add to your compost, and it gives him something tasty to drink after all his hard work! Many brewing companies have stepped up to the plate in making environmentally-friendly home brewing kits that cut down on waste while using organic ingredients. Maybe Dad can even grow his own garden to provide some of his own ingredients!

Solar-Powered Chargers: Those of us with the techy Dads can also keep it eco-friendly on Father’s Day with a solar-powered charger for their phone or tablet device. They’ll be able to charge up their devices without having to plug into an outlet, helping to save money on their power bills. Constantly plugged-in devices can add to your power bills in small ways, but unplugging them can make a big difference!

Planting A Tree: Whether you do it for reforesting, or for a new park, or just because it’s for the planet, planting a tree is always a great idea. You can plant them with Dad, or if you live far away, plant one in his honor. For those whose Dads have passed on, it’s a lovely way to honor the memory of their impact on our lives.
