St. Patrick’s Day is a day when we celebrate all things green. It’s also a day where a little bit of awareness can make you behave even more green in the eco friendly way. What can you do to be a little nicer to Mother Earth while also celebrating Father Ireland? Here are five fun tips from Postconsumers.

Don’t Buy Decorations: Every year, people spend money in dollar stores across the nation (in fact, the world), on green paper hats and green feather boas to use for exactly one day. If you’re going to use or purchase St. Patrick’s Day decorations or costumes, be sure to use them year after year. And think about whether you really need to make that dollar store purchase or not!

Use Fresh Cut Greens: St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to remind you of the green fields of Ireland, so if you want to decorate your home, use some real greens! Stay away from greens from the florist if you can though. Most florists stock flowers and cuts that are from non-sustainable sources.

Recycle the Guinness Cans: Whether you’re using cheap beer dyed green or the nectar of Ireland, Guinness, be sure to recycle the cans afterwards.

Recycle the Jameson Bottles: And when you’re partaking of the harder Irish liquors, be that fine Jameson or creamy Bailey’s, be sure to recycle the bottles as well!

Don’t Litter at the Parade: Most cities celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a local parade. Everybody loves a parade and you should enjoy the day of festivity! However, many people also love to litter at a parade. Don’t be the St. Patrick’s Day litterbug at the parade! Clean up after yourself and pick up any recyclable items that you see left behind.

Most importantly, enjoy your St. Patrick’s Day! Not only is it a day of celebration, but for many of us it will be the start of spring weather. Whether you were raised on cabbage and potatoes or simply want a day that’s an excuse to chase a leprechaun to the end of a rainbow, get out and enjoy the day.
