Now that March is here, it’s time to start thinking about the springtime and warmer weather. And with that warmer weather, it’s a great time to kick start some greening up of your house or living space (along with making plans for spring cleaning). With the winter fading away, most of us feel more energetic around the house. What are some of the ways you can be green for a green March?

Making Your Own Cleaners

One of the best ways to green your house and make cleaning a little safer is to make your own cleaners for just about any job around the house. Basic ingredients like vinegar, salt, baking soda, or lemon can all be used to make different kinds of cleaners for windows, brass, drains, silver polish, and even rust remover. If you’re starting to phase out chemical-filled house cleaners, March is a great month to start making your own.

Conserving Energy

Because the temperatures are starting to rise a little in March, you can start adjusting your energy usage. For some people, March is a great month to minimize the heater or even leave it off completely if possible and cut down on your bills while saving energy. The same goes for your water heater – the less colder weather can mean you can turn down your water temperature a little, too. Sunny days can mean opening up the curtains and letting some light in to heat up your home without using the heater!

Start Researching

March is a super month to start thinking about spring cleaning, which means taking stock of your stuff as well as figuring out what kinds of items need to be taken to the local waste disposal. Take a look at your closet and drawers to find clothes you want to give away and research what charity would be the best fit to take them (for example, you wouldn’t want to give your men’s clothes away to a women’s charity). Also, March is a great time to see what kind of paints or cleaners you’re trying to get rid of and do a little research to find where the nearest disposal plant is for your not-so-environmentally-safe liquids.
