We’re all aware of how much we’re bombarded with advertising: TV, radio, online. In fact, the average American is said to be exposed to over 3,000 messages every single day. Ads are everywhere in our culture, even getting to the point where we’re not sure if the latest viral video is for real or just a sneaky form of advertising trying to get us to buy needlessly. What makes it worse is when we’re trying to get shopping done at the store and we’re seeing even more advertising. In-store advertising is everywhere: from the floor, to the shelves, to audio on the overhead speakers, even to little flat screens at the checkout counter.
Studying in-store advertising is a relatively new phenomenon, and it’s quickly becoming even more pervasive as technology rapidly changes. With the advent of better LCD screens and easier connection to the Internet, it’s becoming easier to push people on those impulse buys and special offers going on in the store. A study last year in the U.K. and Ireland showed that over 70% of purchases were made in-store, while they saw an uptick of up to 50% for some items based on the in-house advertising.
Of course, the best way to not become one of these stats is to always go shopping with a plan! Have a list, only buy the things you need, and stick to it. Knowing that you’re going in and you’re going to be bombarded head-to-toe with advertising will give you a little more armor to resist the urge to buy!
