If you’re already a Postconsumer, you probably know most of the tips and tricks to reduce your spending and how you can consume less to live more. But with the recession, people are learning the hard way that their old spending habits just don’t work anymore. It can be difficult to take the time and figure out what exactly needs to be reduced so you can have a working budget again. There are many things you can cut down on to save money, but here are three major ways you can cut down that will help you get your budget back.
Groceries/Eating Out
Groceries are probably the easiest thing you can look at to cut down on the amount you spend, with a little bit of help and a little bit of patience. First, if you’re not making a specific list of things you need when you go to the store, start making that a habit as soon as possible! You’ll be less likely to pick up things you don’t need. Don’t be afraid of store brands! Most of the time they’re made of the same ingredients as name brand products for a fraction of the cost. If you go out to eat on a regular basis, it’s a great time to learn how to make similar food at home!
Bills
Utilities and other bills can be tricky, because of the changing seasons and inconsistent use of appliances, electronics, and water. But there are a few shortcuts you can do throughout the year. During the winter, heat your house to a lower temperature and wear a layer or two. Then during the summer, close your blinds and windows to keep sunlight and heat out. Instead of doing laundry once a week, try and see if you can stretch your clothes out to every couple of weeks or so. Shorter showers and not running water while you’re brushing your teeth or washing dishes will help reduce your water bill.
Gas
For some of us, driving is a necessity for getting from point A to point B (usually work), and with rising gas prices, getting around has become difficult. To cut down on gas, see if you can share a ride with a friend or coworker for the commute to work (and you’ll be cutting down on emissions, too!). Having at least one day a week where you don’t drive at all will also help reduce gas dependence – go out for a walk instead! To cut down on your gas bill at the pump, consider joining your local grocery store’s rewards program: not only will you save on groceries, but also on gas prices.
