Not only can buying new costumes be expensive, they’re also made of plastics chock full of dangerous chemicals. Face paint isn’t always great for the environment, either. So what can you do to keep this Halloween’s costumes more eco-friendly?
Need Inspiration? Check the Thrift Store
If you’re finding yourself at a loss for inspiration for this year’s costume, the thrift store is a treasure trove of old clothes and accessories that can inspire any kind of outfit. Whether you’re going for a vintage costume or even dressing like a famous celebrity or politician, the thrift store can have just about anything (and it’s good for your budget). And you never know – you may even find something that’s great for a costume and even beyond for everyday wear!
Make Your Own Costume and Face Paint
Those of us who are crafty can take old clothes and tailor them to a new costume, or even find some fabric on sale for inspired costume looks. If you don’t want to buy face paint at the store, you can make your own with a combination of shortening, cornstarch, and food coloring. That way you can make as much or as little as you need for your costume.
Recycle Last Year’s Costume, but be a Zombie Version
With zombies being all the rage right now, it’s easy to turn an old costume into the zombie version of it. I’ve had friends go as a pretty princess one year and then turn it around and go as the zombie princess the next. All it takes is a little red food coloring (or homemade red face paint), a few fabric rips, and some egg yolk in your hair for that dirty zombie look.
