Ties, ties, ties – it seems like every other ad for Father’s Day sales is for ties. I don’t even think my dad ever wore any of the ones my brother and I bought him. The thought is nice, but it always ends up in the back of the closet and eventually in the trash (when it could just as easily go to a thrift store!)
This year, why not try something different and mindful?
Team up for a green project around the house
It seems like there’s always some kind of project going on that either you or Dad are doing. Why not start a green project? Building a garden can be easy (and you can teach him about the awesomeness of composting and growing your own vegetables, herbs, or flowers), and the more people involved, the faster it gets done!
Sustainable materials related to his hobbies
My Dad was a pretty typical guy – he loved golf. My brother’s a dad and loves to golf too, so this year I’m thinking about getting him golf balls and tees made from sustainable materials. How about a solar-powered charger or a push mower for the lawn?
Make him dinner to schedule some 1-on-1 time
Meals are always the best time to hang out and bond with our loved ones, and eating dinner with Dad is no exception. Treat him to a nice organic meal with veggies from your garden if possible and share some childhood stories. Ask him about his favorite memory of you. You might remember something you haven’t thought of in a long time!
Of course, don’t forget to tell your Dad how much you appreciate him! With our busy lives, we get caught up in our own thoughts and habits, and our parents sometimes get lost in the shuffle. Creating stronger bonds with our parents is a great gift, any time of year.
