Between rapidly rising gas prices and the increasingly frustrating security measures and bag-handling fees at the airport, it’s time to start embracing the staycation as an alternative to big road trips or cruises. And it doesn’t hurt to explore your city a little, either!
Now you’re probably asking, “What exactly can I do on my staycation?” Good question, because the word can conjure up lots of boring ideas. It’s all right in your own backyard (literally and figuratively!) Here’s a quick list of inspiring things you can do:
- Visit a museum or art gallery
- Go to the library and read, or check out books you’ve been wanting to read
- Schedule a board game night
- Camp out in your backyard
- Check out an outdoor theater performance
- Explore a National Park near you
- Try a new vegan/vegetarian restaurant
- Start a garden
- Finally get to home improvement projects
- Visit local farmer’s markets
I’ve done a few staycations over the past few years right here in Vegas – including visiting the local museums and having a day at Hoover Dam. The cool thing that not many people know about Vegas is that there is hiking all around the outskirts of the city. A few years ago at the beginning of the summer, a friend of mine and I hiked up one of the mountains here, and it was fantastic. (A little difficult, but worth it!) We got to the top and I got some great pictures of the city. It made me look at Vegas in a whole new way.
Staycations don’t have to be boring affairs – challenge yourself! Try out some new recipes, create something you’ve never done before, do that upcycling project that’s been nagging at you. Remember: do something relaxing, and above all: do something fun! You don’t have to spend much to have a blast this summer.
