As Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching, we wanted to dedicate some quote of the week space to quotes about being thankful. The idea of thankfulness is particularly apt in the quest to become a postconsumer and find the satisfaction of enough. It’s the idea that you can never have enough that has led to our consumer-driven culture and the accompanying media messages regarding consumerism. However, learning to appreciate and be thankful for what you have is a necessary step to appreciating it and realizing that you may not need as much money or as much stuff as you thought. It is actually a quote from Oprah Winfrey that we think pulls this entire philosophy together.
“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never have enough.” (Oprah Winfrey)
That Oprah Winfrey is a wise woman! This quote is so very true, however. The key to finding the satisfaction of enough is to learn to let go of the idea that you always need more, more, more. What’s a better way to do that than to realize that you have enough, enough, enough and that what you do have makes you happy?
Turn Oprah’s idea into reality by actualizing it. Take some quiet time for yourself to reflect on what you have to be thankful for this season. You may be surprised at exactly how abundant that list is.
