Since we discussed his new book, Earth (The Book): A Visitor’s Guide to the Human Race, last week, we thought we’d give Jon Stewart our quote of the week spot. Of course, there are many, many humorous Jon Stewart quotes to pick from, and no shortage of certainly controversial ones as well. We went with something that had to do with a topic that’s near and dear to our hearts: the marvels of mankind.
“The seven marvels that best represent man’s achievements over the last two thousand years will be determined by internet vote. So look for Howard Stern’s Private Parts to come in number one.”

While the quote itself is, of course, funny, the message behind it is clear. It’s a message about who we admire most these days. Not the leaders, intellectuals or philosophizers who seek to build good and better the earth. Unfortunately, so often the greatest heroes in today’s society are those who simply promote a life of excess, saying and doing the things that we’ve always wanted (and to a certain degree have acquired) the rights to do. Stewart may have simply been ripping a joke here, but the truth behind his words is powerful. If left up to the masses to select, our role models would not likely be the people who are most likely to make the world better.
Which is why it’s up to all of us to not only adopt a postconsumer lifestyle, by whatever meaning you give postconsumerism, but to also encourage others to do the same. After all, every single person who begins to reduce and live mindfully makes a difference.
But because it’s Friday, we thought we’d also treat you to one other hysterically funny Jon Stewart quote!
“Ah, Earth Day. The only day of the year where being able to hacky-sack will get you laid.”
