We’re not going to be shy about the fact that we’re big fans of First Lady Michelle Obama here at Postconsumers. Think what you may about the current presidential administration, one can’t deny that Michelle Obama’s initiatives to improve the country are programs that we can all unite behind and agree are important. And she’s doing a great job of pushing forward programs to help end childhood obesity and make Americans healthier. Michelle Obama is a believer, and we at Postconsumers are believers. Perhaps that’s why this quote from the First Lady moved us so much.
“All of us are driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won’t do – that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be.”

In truth, in days when it’s hard to face the challenges of trying to run a cause-related website that has to find ways to fund itself without having non-profit grants or support, we remember that the work of helping to teach people to find the satisfaction of enough, rather than rely on the satisfaction of “stuff,” is an obligation. We believe that we just can’t accept the world as it is.
We also think that it’s important for all of us to remember that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be in whatever way we want, and sometimes that’s an inconvenient thing to do. It requires that we make changes in our lives, push our comfort zones and speak out when it would often be easier not to speak out. It’s not just about encouraging those we care about (and the rest of the world, too!) to learn a way of living that will make them happier and the earth less cluttered, it’s about speaking out for justice, for tolerance and for all of the things that we each believe are ways that the world needs to be.
Her husband may be polarizing, and everybody is entitled to their own political opinion, but the First Lady is doing amazing work. Most importantly, she’s practicing what she preaches in terms of fulfilling her obligation to fight for the world as it should be. Let’s all try to do the same!
