Fall is just around the corner, and for many of us that means not only will the weather get cooler and we’ll need to dress warmer, but also that we’ll be spending more time indoors. We like to give tips on the Postconsumers Blog about hobbies and activities that we can all do in order to try to find things that bring us satisfaction. In honor of the seasonal turn that’s about to happen, we’d like to suggest knitting especially for the ladies!
Knitting has actually become a very trendy activity in the last five to ten years, with knitting stores and clubs popping up in all the most fashionable cities. But we think knitting is a great activity for two reasons. The first is that it’s very meditative. When you’re knitting, you’re thinking of the process of counting stitches and how many loops you need to pull. It’s a very mind-cleansing activity. Secondly, of course we love knitting because at the end of the process you’ve got a beautiful product to either wear yourself or give to somebody you love.
It’s also a way to express yourself. You’ll be able to choose the colors, textures and even the patterns that you knit. Obviously, though, if you’ve never knit before we’d recommend that you start out with a simple scarf instead of frustrating yourself with something more complicated!
Knitting can also be a great social tool. You can take a knitting class if you live in a large enough town or city that has classes available to you. Or you can join or start a knitting group locally to bring people together to knit, talk and probably eat!
In addition to the many books on knitting that you can find at just about any bookstore, if you’re internet friendly there are a number of online tutorials to teach you how to knit. There are also a number of educational dvd sets that you can buy or share/borrow if you don’t have access to (or don’t want to go to) an actual knitting class.
Not every hobby or activity is right for every person, but we think that with fall coming up you should consider giving knitting a try. You never know, you may find that it brings you great satisfaction!
