At last, a mainstream parody on keeping up with the Joneses that helps people yearn to move beyond addictive consumerism (as well as move beyond the production values of the film, but it’s the brilliant concept that counts). “The Joneses” is a fascinating movie that just opened around the country, starring Demi Moore and David Duchovny. Billed as “a satire on our consumerist society” and “a zeitgeist film,” I loved the clear message and clever embedding: when Mr. Jones jokes “we are going to do some damage in this town,” he wasn’t just kidding. Even though I think the smart tale is better than the execution, I hope this movie becomes an icon as it takes down icon-seeking materialism.
