Summer’s in full swing, which means the temptation to watch television during some idle hours is strong in a lot of households. If you’re thinking perhaps you may fall into that temptation, here are some pointers to start breaking the habit.

GoonaTVfast

If you watch far too much television and aren’t quite ready to go cold turkey quite yet, think about taking a fast – start with 7 days and see if it works out. That way, you can assess if you want to extend the fast further than a week. So what do you do during your fast? Start that Satisfaction Journal, make a dent in the stack of books you’ve been holding off reading – or any number of volunteer and creative groups that meet up in real life!

Be mindful of your entertainment

One of the best ways to reduce what you’re watching is to think about what kind of shows you like to catch. Do they make you think? Is there something you can learn? Paying close attention to your viewing habits can help you see what shows you should maybe stop watching.

Remove the set completely

A long time ago, I used to have a TV set in my bedroom. It got to the point where I couldn’t sleep without it on. But it’s just a waste of power – and, ultimately, just a way to distract my mind from everything. When I moved house, I made it a point to not have a television in my bedroom. Now I read in bed so that I can properly relax when I fall asleep – and I sleep better too! If you’re completely getting rid of the TV in your home, make sure you donate or e-cycle it.
